Appropriations

State Appropriations per College-Age Resident 2013-2014

What it is: The total amount of funds appropriated by the state to public universities divided by the state's population aged 18-24. State spending on public universities is shown in 2016 dollars.

Why it matters: All state appropriations going to Michigan’s public universities help each school fulfill their individual mission. Whether it is to produce more graduates, increase access for low income students, or contribute research; every dollar from Michigan taxpayers contributes to the success of each Michigan public university. Michigan is unique in that most state appropriations dollars are not ear-marked for specific activities. Therefore, the whole dollar amount going to each Michigan public university matters. Each school uses their appropriations to produce more graduates, lower tuition for in- state students, award scholarships, and create economic impact in our state.
